Here is a Brand New, and amazing sounding, US made hand pan, made by Dave from Daves Island Instruments (DII)! This is a brand new Gaia hand pan in the Earth scale. I'm Portlands exclusive retailer of DII hand pans.

(D) A Bb C D E F A. The Earth Scale, also known as the "Integral scale", is a D minor tuning and is one of the more popular tunings. It was a tuning that Pan Art used on their Hang drums, and the band Hang massive has some popular youtube videos with this scale. It has a somewhat dark or haunting feel and is easy to play, though many "moods" can be played with this D minor tuning. Here is a video of this exact drum.

The DII Gaya model is a Nitrated steel drum, or heat treated steel drum, which is supposed to help prevent rust and corrosion, but still needs to be protected against the elements. It has a beautiful, blue tint and needs periodic frog lube for rust prevention. The shell is quite durable, but you still want to treat it with the care of any high end instrument! This is one of the last DII Nitrated drums, as he has now moved to stainless steel.

Dave has been making steel drums for over 25 years, and has been making hand pans for about a decade. His skill and attention to detail are top notch, and his precision tuning is comparable to all the reputable makers! Dave has graciously allowed me to help distribute some of his instruments, and my 20 years of experience tuning flutes, and 30 years of experience playing percussion instruments, gives me the ear to know a precision tuned hand pan, and the feel to recognize the important inflections and subtleties of these fine percussion instruments! Other makers with this exceptional quality, often times charge significantly more for this level of craftsmanship, but Dave has mastered his craft, and has the ability to offer these hand pans at a very fair price!
